Jewelry, like most things in life, requires tender loving care. Jewelry that is continuously exposed will eventually tarnish, oxidize and attract dirt and grime. Some factors that affect jewelry and cause a change in it's original state are skin chemistry, harsh chemicals such as cleaning solutions and chlorine, beauty products such as perfume and lotion and extremely hot or cold temperatures.
Certain precautions such as the manner in which it is worn, stored and cleaned will help prolong its lifetime. Most jewelry can simply be cleaned by using warm water and mild soap and then polishing it with a non-abrasive polishing cloth. For more details, please see the information below.
Sterling Silver:
Silver in it's purest form is too soft to be used for jewelry and other items. It is therefore mixed with other metals to make it more durable. A popular silver mixture, called an alloy, is known as sterling silver. Sterling silver is a precious metal that can increase in value overtime. Sterling silver that is constantly exposed to air and moisture will eventually tarnish and oxidize. It should be stored in tarnish prevention cloths or bags and kept in a cool dry place. The best way to clean sterling silver jewelry is by using a jewelry polishing cloth. A low abrasive cleaners such as 3M Tarni-Shield Silver Polish can also be used but the cloth is the recommended choice. Sterling silver sometimes develops patina that can give it an antique look. Polishing will restore the jewelry to it's original appearance.
Copper:
Copper is a versatile material that is quite popular with artists. It is strong and durable and will last for many years. Copper sometimes has a lacquer finish to keep it from tarnishing or oxidizing. Copper that is continuously exposed will eventually tarnish and develop patina. Some love this antique look and prefer to keep the jewelry in that state. Cleaning copper is very easy. Simply soaking it in lemon juice with salt or vinegar for approximately 5-15 minutes will restore it to it's original state. Once it is dry, polishing it with a non-abrasive polishing cloth will restore the shine. For copper jewelry that has a lacquer coating, do not use these methods. Simply cleaning it with warm water and mild soap will do the job.
Rhodium:
Rhodium is a member of the platinum family and also considered a precious metal. It is silvery white and highly reflective and is often used to plate jewelry.
Like many other metal, continuous exposure will eventually cause rhodium to tarnish and oxidize. Storing it in non-tarnishing bags and cloths will prolong it's original state. Rhodium can be cleaned using a solution of warm water and mild soap and then polished with a non-abrasive cloth to restore it's shine.
Brass:
Brass is a mixture of zinc, copper and sometimes other metals. It's lustrous golden color makes it a popular metal used in the jewelry world. Like all other metals, brass that is continuously exposed, will tarnish and oxidize over time. When brass tarnishes, it develops patina which gives it an antique look which is desirable to many. Brass can also be cleaned by simply using warm water with mild soap. A polishing cloth will help restore the shine. A non-abrasive brass polish can also be used for deeper cleaning.
Glass:
Glass is also a very versatile material that has grown in popularity over the years. It can easily and simply be cleaned using warm water and mild soap.
Wood:
Wood jewelry can easily be cleaned using a damp cloth. To restore it's shine, it can be polished with tea tree oil or jojoba oil. Never soak wood jewelry as it can swell.
